What is occupational therapy for children?

Have you or a family member ever been diagnosed with a new health condition and found yourself asking, “Now what?”

Maybe you have a child with Autism who is having trouble succeeding in school. Or maybe your child has not been progressing as expected in certain areas for some time now.

Occupational therapy can help you answer that “Now what?” question for your child. As an occupational therapy practitioner, I will keep the focus on the things you want your child to be able to do — her goals, her activities, and eventually her independence.

I can help your child live life to its fullest regardless of his health condition, disability, or risk factors.

Occupational therapy, through the use of activities, helps children do the things they need to do to function within a school and home setting – and fosters their development to their fullest potential.

Why would my child need occupational therapy?

Delays in development, like Autism, may hinder your child from interacting effectively with classmates.

How do I know if my child needs occupational therapy?
  • You observe that your child is having difficulty doing things that other children the same age seem able to do
  • Your pediatrician suggests it because of delays they observe
  • A preschool teacher suggests your child may benefit from it
  • A psychologist evaluates your child and recommends it

What types of problems can you help my child overcome?
  • On the Autism Spectrum behaviors (whether or not the child is eventually diagnosed with Autism)
  • Hyper-responsiveness or unresponsiveness to external stimuli (aka hyperactivity)
  • Balance difficulties or lower extremity coordination problems, including walking, crawling, or sitting
  • Difficulty with the use of arms, legs, and trunk to play with toys
  • Manual dexterity problems that lead to difficulties in dressing, eating, writing, or using a computer keyboard
  • Difficulty with visual / perceptual coordination needed to read books and play with small toys
  • Difficulty with understanding, tolerating, and participating in a normal environment
  • Social / emotional impact of delays
What will you do to help my child?

The first thing I will do is talk with you about what you are seeing and hearing from your child and what has you concerned.

I will then evaluate your child’s situation with input from you as well as other people in his life, including your family, care provider, and school (if applicable).

I will help you form individualized goals for your son or daughter and will then work with him and you on a specific intervention plan to help your child reach his goals and perform activities of daily living.

I will tailor my approach to your child and his unique gifts.

How long are sessions?

Anywhere between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the needs of your child.

Where can I wait while you’re seeing my child?

You can either go to nearby café or diner or sit in the waiting area, depending upon what you’re most comfortable with. Most parents like to go and come back at the end of the session.

Do you take insurance?

No.

What do I do to get started?

Call and we’ll do a free consultation. I will only book an appointment if I am certain I can help.

Are there any forms?

I will email you the forms to complete before the first appointment.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellation must be at least 24 hours prior to scheduled appointment or you will be billed for the full cost of the session. You can cancel by phone, text, or email. A simple phone call and voice message is all that I need.

Is your office handicapped-accessible?

Yes.

What is a free initial phone consultation?

It is a phone call that I ask parents to do with me before setting up the first appointment so that I can hear your concerns about your child and determine if my service is likely to help. And if it is, we will arrange the first appointment.

What does Occupational Therapy do?

Occupational therapy addresses fine motor, gross motor, perceptual motor, balance, and a variety of other sensory delays through rewiring of the brain and retraining of muscles from head to toe. It works with the child’s mind and control of their body.

What ages do you work with?

Toddlers / preschoolers between 3-6 years old.

Who is your perfect client?

A parent who is observant of their child, cares deeply about him or her, and is committed to getting them the right type of help no matter what it takes.

How do I know if you’re the right therapist for my child?

Two ways. One is your own gut feeling after you speak with me and meet me. The other is how your child responds to me. If he or she likes coming to see me, it means they are getting something from it and it would be good to continue.

Do you work with people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions?

I love working with people from all different backgrounds, so long as they have a background of love of their child.

What can I expect from the first session?

A thorough evaluation, written by me, of your child’s strengths and areas in need of improvement for his or her age.

How long will my child be in therapy?

That depends on what the issues and concerns are. Once I have seen and evaluated your child, we discuss a plan and a likely timeframe. Occupational therapy with a child tends to be a long-term measure. Though you are likely to see results quickly, it could take quite a while to get your child to a place where you and I believe he or she has gotten the maximum benefit from it.

Is there anyone you won’t see?

I will not work with a situation in which there is active and reportable abuse, neglect, or maltreatment of the child. As a mandated reporter, if I witness child abuse, I am obligated to report it to the State Abuse Hotline.

What is therapy like with you?

The children who see me generally enjoy the therapy experience. I make it fun for them by giving them just the right amount of challenge, and they feel a sense of empowerment as they learn and accomplish new things.

How do you work with kids?

I begin with a process of us discovering their likes, interests, and abilities, and then help them uses those gifts to learn new things and build on them.

What are the best ways to reach you?

By phone at (917) 720-6086 or email at Therapy4Growth@gmail.com.

What is distinct about your practice?

In addition to being a therapist, I am also an artist and ordained minister. As a result, I bring in a creative and spiritual side to my work.

Cats or dogs?

Dogs, obviously! 😊

Have you been in therapy yourself?

In order to learn how to do this, I was a subject of these methods in my training classes for over 20 years. I also periodically have used psychotherapy. I did have some brief hypnotherapy from my trainer after 9/11, and it helped me put that experience squarely behind me.

I help you create the conditions for you to learn and experience change in your life.

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Dissociative Reprocessing. It’s not something I do because I have another technique that is the basis for EMDR and works much quicker and more effectively. It’s called EMI (Eye Movement Integration) and has been around a lot longer than EMDR. Some people think that the developer of EMDR, Francine Shapiro, took her ideas from EMI and adapted them.

What are the risks and benefits of doing therapy?

The risk is that you change so much that people close to you might not recognize you and then your relationships change. The benefits of not having a phobia or PTSD anymore is self-evident.

What else can I try to help me help myself?

Physical movement is always good to dislodge oneself from a stuck state to an active state. On my Resources page, I list some online resources, including a free happiness course at Yale.

How do I know if you are the right therapist for me?

That will depend on the feeling you get from our initial phone consultation. Not every therapist is a match for every client. I have no problem with a client asking to be referred out, if they don’t feel I am the right therapist.

Who is your perfect client?

Adult men and women who have a problem, have an idea of what they want help with, and are punctual and committed to change.

What is Hypnosis?

“Hypnosis is an induced passive state in which there is an increased amenability and responsiveness to suggestions and commands, provided that these do not conflict with the subject’s own conscious or unconscious wishes” (Dorland’s Medical Dictionary, 1974 edition). Generally, this responsiveness and ability to focus is related to the ability of the hypnotist and on the rapport between hypnotist and client.

What is a trance?

Hypnotic state and trance state are often used interchangeably. When someone is in a trance state, they’re in a state of focused attention on a singular thought, feeling, or activity. The trance state provides freedom from one’s ordinary conscious tendency to focus on distracting, irrelevant, or negative conscious considerations. Most of us regularly experience trance. For example, when we’re engrossed in a book, TV show, or movie, and are so focused that we don’t hear what someone just said to us or are not aware of other distractions in our environment, we are in a trance state.

What type of hypnosis do you do with clients?

My training and practice is in Ericksonian Hypnosis and NLP, which stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. NLP is a communication model to influence thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in ourselves and others. It often involves language patterns that induce a very ‘light’ trance. Clients are awake in a relaxed state and in complete control of their consciousness, as they are asked to bring up images, thoughts, or feelings of experience in the past or a desired future.

What is the difference between Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy?

In hypnotherapy, the therapist takes a very active role in guiding the content and imagery of the session. The client allows the therapist to drive. In psychotherapy, there is more discussion between client and therapist where the client drives the content of the discussion.

Hypnotherapy sessions require advanced preparation by the therapist and are typically quite structured. Psychotherapy sessions are by comparison less structured and more responsive to what the client brings to the session.

What is your specialty?

Post-Traumatic flashbacks or nightmares, bad memories, and phobias. I have specialized training in the use of techniques developed by the world’s greatest clinical masters that are the most effective methods of trauma and phobia resolution.

What do you actually DO in session with clients?

Our initial session will be spent gathering information about the problem or issue you would like to resolve.

Once I have a good understanding of your current state and the problem you wish to get help with, I will begin asking you questions about your desired state. By the end of session #1, we will have designed a desired outcome.

The next few sessions will involve the change operations that will be done to help you achieve your desired outcome. Once we achieve it, we’ll do a follow-up visit to see if there are any additional concerns or considerations before we close out our treatment.

The actual change technique depends on the type of issue you present that you want resolved. If you are coming to get phobia or trauma resolution therapy, there are specific techniques used that I will describe, usually in the first or second session.

Do your clients receive assignments?

Not typically but I wouldn’t want to rule it out. I have been known to occasionally give them! 😊

What modalities do you use?

Hypnotherapy and NLP when we’re targeting a specific issue for a desired outcome.

Do you ever do long-term psychotherapy?

Yes, it is an option for some issues. Typically, when the client has not yet designed an outcome and wants to use therapy as more of a sounding board.

What are the best ways to reach you?

If you’re a first-time client, you can simply call for the free phone consultation. If we already know each other, text is fine for appointment scheduling or other housekeeping issues.

If you’re reaching out for the first time via text or email, please include your full name, date of birth, phone contact, and best times for me to call you back.

How do you like to get to the office?

By bicycle in almost any weather condition, except heavy rain or snow.

What do you like to do for fun?

I like physical activity (biking, hiking, walking), movies, theatre, and taking my dog out to experience the world.

What is the craziest thing you ever did in your youth?

Once while cycle touring at age 20, I slept in a cemetery in Maine on the way to Nova Scotia by bicycle. It was actually very quiet and relaxing!

What if I have another question not addressed on this FAQ page?

That easy, just ask me by calling, texting, or emailing! 😊

Questions about Coaching

How is coaching different from therapy?

Coaching is a form of 1:1 teaching with the goal of promoting new ways of thinking and engaging with the world. It can be delivered by phone, video, or direct contact. Due to the current global coronavirus pandemic, right now it is only being offered via Zoom video or telephonically.

What happens in coaching sessions?

We will discuss your challenges, concerns, and your desired outcome. We will set some goals that you want to accomplish. Then we will set about crafting a plan to help you achieve these goals.

When you have achieved the goals, you can either set new ones or end the coaching work. We can also decide to have regular coaching check-ups if you decide you still want contact but don’t need it as frequently as when you first started coaching.

What can you provide as a coach that distinguishes you from other personal coaches out there?

My 30+ years of therapy experience plus my Hypnotherapy training, plus my 15 years of working with executives on Wall Street, distinguish me from other coaches who don’t have this background.

What are the areas of focus?

Right now, many people are talking about the impact this global pandemic is having on them, and they need strategies to deal with:

• Fear of the virus
• Adjustment to working from home
• Economic insecurity (“what happened to my 401K!”; “will I have a job in 6 months or even 1 month?”)
• Worries about loved ones who we are not cohabitating with
• Worries about loved ones we are cohabitating with
• Grief from loss of normal routines
• Dealing with loneliness and social isolation due to “social distancing”
• Dealing with conflict at home now that everyone is there all of the time
• The regular adversities of life including job problems, spouse problems, parenting problems, eldercare problems, grief and loss, worries about the future, and sadness about the past.

What is the cost for coaching?

$200/hour

Is coaching covered by insurance?

Since coaching is NOT therapy, it is not a considered a health service and is therefore NOT reimbursed by insurance.

What is the difference between your Resilience Coaching and Resilience classes that I can take online for free?

I encourage my clients to take free online Resilience and Happiness classes and even provide a link to one on my Resources page.

How Resilience Coaching is different is that it takes the concepts you might learn in a Resilience class and applies them to YOUR life and your unique circumstances.

Coaching is somewhat of a middle ground between a class with didactic learning and therapy where the focus is solely on your difficulties. We take certain concepts of Resilience and figure how to apply them to you!
